Salmonella disrupts CR via type VI and type III secretion systems (T6SS/T3SS), inducing dysbiosis, inflammasome-driven inflammation, and intestinal barrier damage. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle:dysbiosis alters microbial metabolites, sustains inflammation, and enhances pathogen fitness, favoring chronic infection. This review integrates molecular mechanisms of microbiota disruption, inflammasome activation, and metabolic imbalance to explain how Salmonella overcomes CR. We also highlight microbiota-based countermeasures, including probiotics, natural antimicrobials, and phage therapy, as promising strategies to restore gut homeostasis.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (article license as recorded by Europe PMC; abstract reproduced unmodified apart from markup removal)","license":"CC-BY","is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":[],"details":null,"provenance":"europepmc","attribution":"Abstract of \"Subverting colonization resistance: <i>Salmonella</i> pathogenesis at the interface of microbiota, metabolism and inflammasome\" by Gao Z, Li Z, Cui J et al., https://doi.org/10.1080/21505594.2026.2745323, used under its Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY); markup removed, otherwise unmodified.","topics":[{"slug":"infectious-disease-amr","name":"Infectious Disease, Vaccines & Antimicrobial Resistance","domain_slug":"medicine"}],"cited_in_dossiers":[]}
