Immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies, such as ipilimumab, may help the body's immune system attack the cancer, and may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Interferon alfa-2b may interfere with the growth of tumor cells and slow the growth of melanoma and other cancers. It is not yet known whether ipilimumab is more effective than interferon alfa-2b in treating patients with melanoma.","abstract_license":"ClinicalTrials.gov (U.S. National Library of Medicine), data processed 2026-10-29T09:00:05; modifications: selected fields only; whitespace normalized; brief summary truncated to 2,000 characters","license":"ClinicalTrials.gov terms (attribution, processing date, modifications noted)","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Melanoma of Unknown Primary","Recurrent Melanoma","Stage IIIB Cutaneous Melanoma AJCC v7","Stage IIIC Cutaneous Melanoma AJCC v7","Stage IV Cutaneous Melanoma AJCC v6 and v7"],"details":{"acronym":null,"status":"ACTIVE_NOT_RECRUITING","phase":"PHASE3","study_type":"INTERVENTIONAL","enrollment":1673,"sponsor":"National Cancer Institute (NCI)","conditions":["Melanoma of Unknown Primary","Recurrent Melanoma","Stage IIIB Cutaneous Melanoma AJCC v7","Stage IIIC Cutaneous Melanoma AJCC v7","Stage IV Cutaneous Melanoma AJCC v6 and v7"],"interventions":["BIOLOGICAL: Ipilimumab","OTHER: Quality-of-Life Assessment","BIOLOGICAL: Recombinant Interferon Alfa-2b"],"start_date":"2011-06-17","start_date_type":"ACTUAL","primary_completion_date":"2019-02-15","has_results":true,"data_source":"ClinicalTrials.gov","data_processed":"2026-10-29T09:00:05","modifications":"selected fields only; whitespace normalized; brief summary truncated to 2,000 characters"},"provenance":"clinicaltrials","attribution":"Source: ClinicalTrials.gov (U.S. National Library of Medicine), data processed 2026-10-29T09:00:05; modifications: selected fields only; whitespace normalized; brief summary truncated to 2,000 characters.
