In order to be efficient, the HTS devices need to have a sufficiently low value of AC loss, in addition to the necessary current-carrying capacity. Most applications are operated with currents beyond the current capacity of single conductors and consequently require cabled conductor solutions with much higher current carrying capacity, from a few kA to up to 20-30 kA for large hydro-generators. A century ago, in 1914, Ludwig Roebel invented a low-loss cable design for copper cables, which was successively named after him. The main idea behind Roebel cables is to separate the current in different strands and to provide a full transposition of the strands along the cable direction. Nowadays, these cables are commonly used in the stator of large generators. Based on the same design concept of their conventional material counterparts, HTS Roebel cables from REBCO coated conductors were first manufactured at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and have been successively developed in a number of varieties that provide all the required technical features such as fully transposed strands, high transport currents and low AC losses, yet retaining enough flexibility for a specific cable design. In the past few years a large number of scientific papers have been published on the concept, manufacturing and characterization of such cables. Times are therefore mature for a review of those results. The goal is to provide an overview and a succinct and easy-to-consult guide for users, developers, and manufacturers of this kind of HTS cables.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con","physics.ins-det"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). The performance of REBCO CCs is strongly influenced by fabrication route, conductor architecture and materials, and these parameters vary from one manufacturer to the others. In the present work we have examined the critical surface for the current density, Jc(T,B,$θ$), of coated conductors from six different manufacturers: American Superconductor Co. (US), Bruker HTS GmbH (Germany), Fujikura Ltd. (Japan), SuNAM Co. Ltd. (Korea), SuperOx ZAO (Russia) and SuperPower Inc. (US). Electrical transport and magnetic measurements were performed at temperatures between 4.2 K and 77 K and in magnetic field up to 19 T. Experiments were conducted at three different orientations of the field with respect to the crystallographic c-axis of the REBCO layer, $θ$ = 0$°$, 45$°$ and 90$°$, in order to probe the angular anisotropy of Jc. In spite of the large variability of CCs performance, we show here that field and temperature dependences of Jc at a given angle can be reproduced over wide ranges using a scaling relation based only on three parameters. Furthermore, we present and validate a new approach combining magnetic and transport measurements for the determination of the scaling parameters with minimal experimental effort.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). The coil was quenched safely several times without degradation. Contributing to the success of this coil was the introduction of a thin polyester film that surrounded the conductor. A detailed characterization of the superconducting properties of a 15 mol. % Zr-added REBCO thin film made by metal organic chemical vapor deposition, from 4.2 to 77 K under magnetic fields up to 31 T is presented in this article. Even at a such high level of Zr addition, Tc depression has been avoided (Tc = 91 K), while at the same time an exceptionally high irreversibility field Hirr ≈ 14.8 T at 77 K and a remarkably high vortex pinning force density Fp ≈ 1.7 TN/m3 at 4.2 K have been achieved. We ascribe the excellent pinning performance at high temperatures to the high density (equivalent vortex matching field ∼7 T) of self-assembled BZO nanorods, while the low temperature pinning force is enhanced by large additional pinning which we ascribe to strain-induced point defects induced in the REBCO matrix by the BZO nanorods. Our results suggest even more room for further performance enhancement of commercial REBCO coated conductors and point the way to REBCO coil applications at liquid nitrogen temperatures since the critical current density Jc(H//c) characteristic at 77 K are now almost identical to those of fully optimized Nb-Ti at 4 K.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Superconducting Materials and Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"Strongly enhanced vortex pinning from 4 to 77 K in magnetic fields up to 31 T in 15 mol.% Zr-added (Gd, Y)-Ba-Cu-O superconducting tapes\" by Aixia Xu, Louis Delgado, N D Khatri et al., https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4872060, used under its Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY); markup removed, otherwise unmodified."},{"id":"doi:10.1088/1361-6668/aaadf2","kind":"article","title":"The effect of fast neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of REBCO coated conductors with and without artificial pinning centers","authors":["David X Fischer","R. The magnet coils responsible for producing the field required for confining the fusion plasma are exposed to considerable neutron radiation. This makes irradiation studies necessary for understanding the radiation response of the superconductor. High temperature superconductors are promising candidates as magnet coil materials. YBCO and GdBCO tapes of several manufacturers were irradiated to fast neutron fluences of up to 3.9 × 10 22 m −2 in the research reactor at the Atominstitut. Low energy neutrons contribute to the fission reactor spectrum but not to the expected spectrum at the fusion magnets. Low energy neutrons have to be shielded in irradiation experiments to avoid their substantial effect on the superconducting properties of tapes containing gadolinium. The critical current ( I c ) of the tapes in this study was examined at fields of up to 15 T and down to a temperature of 30 K. I c first increases upon irradiation and reaches a maximum at a certain fluence, which depends highly on temperature, being highest at low temperature. I c declines at high fluences and eventually degrades with respect to its initial value. Tapes with artificial pinning centers (APCs) degrade at lower fluences than tapes without them. The n -values decrease in all types of tapes after irradiation even when the critical currents are increased. The field dependence of the volume pinning force differs in pristine tapes with and without APCs but shows the same behavior after irradiation.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Superconducting Materials and Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"The effect of fast neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of REBCO coated conductors with and without artificial pinning centers\" by David X Fischer, R. To reach this goal, a full-scale synchronous HTS generator was successfully designed, built and field-tested in a 3.6 MW turbine. The generator has a rotor with 40 superconducting coils of 1.4 m long. The required >20 km of coated conductor was produced within the project’s time schedule. All coils were tested prior to assembly, with >90% of them behaving as expected. The technical readiness level of HTS coils was thus increased to level 7. Simultaneously, the maturing of cryogenic cooling technology over the last decade was illustrated by the several Gifford-McMahon cold-heads that were installed on-board the rotor and connected with the stationary compressors through a rotating coupling. The cryogenic system outperformed design expectations, enabling stable coil temperatures far below the design temperature of 30 K after only 14 d of cool-down. After ground-based testing at the IWES facility in Bremerhaven, Germany, the generator was installed on an existing turbine in Thyborøn, Denmark. Here, the generator reached the target power range and produced power for over 650 h of grid operation.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Superconducting Materials and Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"Design and in-field testing of the world’s first ReBCO rotor for a 3.6 MW wind generator\" by Anne Bergen, Rasmus S. Nevertheless, the mechanical and superconducting performances of these CC tapes are significantly affected by interface failures, such as interfacial delamination and coating fractures, which arise from the complex interplay of mechanical stress induced by magnet processing, thermal mismatch stress during cooling, electromagnetic stress under high magnetic fields, and thermal stress during quenching. This study comprehensively reviews the interface properties and failure behavior of REBCO CC tapes. First, the research progress in characterizing the intricate interface properties of REBCO CC is systematically reviewed. Hence, we are not yet at a point where we can dial-in the compositions and process parameters to optimise pinning for particular applications having specific temperature, field, and field angle requirements. In this review, we cover the critical materials science aspects which enable the understanding, design and engineering of desired pinning centre morphologies. Our main emphasis is on in in situ epitaxial growth of REBCO films by vapour deposition. We review the optimal pinning centre morphologies which have been determined to be effective for different operation regimes. We also highlight how the interplay of thermodynamics (including epitaxial effects), film-particle interfacial strain, and kinetics determine pinning morphologies. Finally, we also briefly cover pinning in rapid ex situ , liquid assisted growth which is likely to be a necessary universal approach for applications where low cost is critical.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Superconducting Materials and Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"Materials design for artificial pinning centres in superconductor PLD coated conductors\" by John Feighan, A. Whatever the case, thermal properties of REBCO tapes play a key role for the stability of superconducting devices. In this work, we present the first study on the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ$) of REBCO coated conductors in magnetic fields up to 19 T applied both parallelly and perpendicularly to the thermal-current direction. Copper-stabilized tapes from six industrial manufacturers have been investigated. We show that zero-field $κ$ of coated conductors can be calculated with an accuracy of $\\pm 15%$ from the residual resistivity ratio of the stabilizer and the Cu/non-Cu ratio. Measurements performed at high fields have allowed us to evaluate the consistency of the procedures generally used for estimating in-field $κ$ in the framework of the Wiedemann-Franz law from an electrical characterization of the materials. In-field data are intended to provide primary ingredients for the thermal stability analysis of high-temperature superconductor-based magnets.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). In the design and fabrication of such ultrahigh field REBCO magnets, it is essential to understand the behavior of REBCO coated conductor. The effect of heating on the properties of commercial REBCO coated conductors is very important for many practical reasons. Nevertheless, a comprehensive study on this effect have not yet been presented in the published literature. This work studies a commercial REBCO coated conductor heat-treated at temperatures between 175 °C and 300 °C for various durations. Critical current and lap joint resistivity were measured at 77 K and 4.2 K for the heat-treated samples. We found that critical current degrades with heat treatment time and temperature. This degradation can be described by a one-dimensional oxygen out-diffusion model with a diffusion coefficient of D = 2.5 x 10-6 exp (-1.17 eV/kT) m2/s. The heat treatment also causes appreciable increase in joint resistivity. Comprehensive structural and chemical analyses were performed on Cu/Ag/RECBO interfaces by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Our electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) study provided direct evidence of oxygen deficiency in the heat treated REBCO samples. In addition, it is found that the oxygen diffused out of the REBCO layer forms mostly Cu2O at both Ag/REBCO and Cu/Ag interfaces. Cu2O is also observed at grain boundaries of the Ag layer. The oxygen out-diffusion model proposed in this work is used to predict REBCO thermal degradation in several engineering scenarios.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). A two-dimensional axisymmetric electromagnetic-thermal-structure multi-physics multi-layer FE model with main layers of the coated conductor and insulation materials is developed. The radial stress and hoop stress on each constituent layer induced by thermal mismatch stress during cooling are investigated. The mechanical behaviour of each constituent material is also analysed by considering the thermal mismatch stress and electromagnetic force under 20 T background field. The results show that discrete stresses appear in all the constituent materials indicating that the multi-layer winding model containing the main constituent materials is necessary for the accurate stress analysis in an epoxy-impregnated REBCO winding. The stress of each constituent material induced by thermal mismatch during cooling process are too high to be ignored in the subsequent electromagnetic structure analysis. The mechanical-magnetic coupling analyses show that the stresses of all the constituent materials increase with the transport current. The plastic failure mainly induced by hoop stress successively occurs on copper stabilizer and Hastelloy substrate of the innermost turn, and the plastic region propagates from the inner turns to the outer turns with the increase of transport current. The failure of the superconducting layer occurs before the yield in Hastelloy due to the direct action of Lorentz force on the superconducting layers. The transverse tensile stress increases with the increasing transport current, indicating that the risk of transverse delamination failure increases with the increase of transport current. The mechanical failure modes including delamination within the conductor, plastic deformation in substrate and crack in superconducting layer should be seriously considered.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Superconducting Materials and Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"Electromagnetic-thermal-structure multi-layer nonlinear elastoplastic modelling study on epoxy-impregnated REBCO pancake coils in high-field magnets\" by Peifeng Gao, Mingzhi Guan, Xingzhe Wang et al., https://doi.org/10.1016/j.supcon.2022.100002, used under its Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY); markup removed, otherwise unmodified."},{"id":"doi:10.1088/1361-6668/aba79d","kind":"article","title":"Analyses of the plastic deformation of coated conductors deconstructed from ultra-high field test coils","authors":["Xinbo Hu","Michael Small","Kwang Lok Kim","Kwangmin Kim","Kabindra R. With an LTS background magnet and a small HTS insert coil, we were able to carry out direct observations on the hoop strains of a 10-mm wide REBCO sample. Measured data was compared against numerical solutions solved by electromagnetic models based on T -A formulation and homogeneous mechanical models, showing good agreements. In order to reduce their high AC loss, it is necessary to understand the loss mechanisms. In this article, we measure and simulate the AC loss and the critical current, I_c, in stacks of pancake coils (\"pancakes\"). We construct stacks of up to 4 pancakes and we measure them by electrical means. We also obtain the anisotropic field dependence of J_c from I_c measurements of the tape. This J_c is the only input to the simulations, together with the coil dimensions. After validating our computations with the measurements, we simulate stacks of many pancakes, up to 32. We found that the AC loss in a stack of (four) pancakes is very high, two orders of magnitude larger than for a single tape. A double pancake behaves as a single one with double width but a stack of more pancakes is very different. Finally, we found that a 2-strand Roebel cable reduces the AC loss in a stack of pancakes but not in a single pancake. In conclusion, the AC loss in stacks of pancakes is too high. However, our simulations are useful to predict the AC loss and optimise the coil design, reducing the AC loss.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0).
