Transmissive metasurfaces are especially important, as most optical systems used in practice operate in transmission. Several types of transmissive metasurfaces have been realized, but with either low transmission efficiencies or limited control over polarization and phase. Here we show a metasurface platform based on high-contrast dielectric elliptical nano-posts which provides complete control of polarization and phase with sub-wavelength spatial resolution and experimentally measured efficiency ranging from 72% to 97%, depending on the exact design. Such complete control enables the realization of most free-space transmissive optical elements such as lenses, phase-plates, wave-plates, polarizers, beam-splitters, as well as polarization switchable phase holograms and arbitrary vector beam generators using the same metamaterial platform.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Metamaterials and Metasurfaces Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). Planar metamaterials with subwavelength thickness, or metasurfaces, consisting of single-layer or few-layer stacks of planar structures, can be readily fabricated using lithography and nanoprinting methods, and the ultrathin thickness in the wave propagation direction can greatly suppress the undesirable losses. Metasurfaces enable a spatially varying optical response, mold optical wavefronts into shapes that can be designed at will, and facilitate the integration of functional materials to accomplish active control and greatly enhanced nonlinear response. This paper reviews recent progress in the physics of metasurfaces operating at wavelengths ranging from microwave to visible. We provide an overview of key metasurface concepts such as anomalous reflection and refraction, and introduce metasurfaces based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and Huygens' metasurfaces, as well as their use in wavefront shaping and beam forming applications, followed by a discussion of polarization conversion in few-layer metasurfaces and their related properties. An overview of dielectric metasurfaces reveals their ability to realize unique functionalities coupled with Mie resonances and their low ohmic losses. We also describe metasurfaces for wave guidance and radiation control, as well as active and nonlinear metasurfaces. Finally, we conclude by providing our opinions of opportunities and challenges in this rapidly developing research field.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Metamaterials and Metasurfaces Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). This half-century-old material is currently embracing a revolution in thin-film LN integrated photonics. The success of manufacturing wafer-scale, high-quality, thin films of LN on insulator (LNOI), accompanied with breakthroughs in nanofabrication techniques, have made high-performance integrated nanophotonic components possible. With rapid development in the past few years, some of these thin-film LN devices, such as optical modulators and nonlinear wavelength converters, have already outperformed their legacy counterparts realized in bulk LN crystals. Furthermore, the nanophotonic integration enabled ultra-low-loss resonators in LN, which unlocked many novel applications such as optical frequency combs and quantum transducers. In this Review, we cover -- from basic principles to the state of the art -- the diverse aspects of integrated thin-film LN photonics, including the materials, basic passive components, and various active devices based on electro-optics, all-optical nonlinearities, and acousto-optics. We also identify challenges that this platform is currently facing and point out future opportunities. The field of integrated LNOI photonics is advancing rapidly and poised to make critical impacts on a broad range of applications in communication, signal processing, and quantum information.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":false,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["physics.optics","physics.app-ph"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). Recently, the emerging field of metasurfaces, which consist of a monolayer of photonic artificial atoms, has offered attractive functionalities for shaping wave fronts of light by introducing an abrupt interfacial phase discontinuity. Here we realize three-dimensional holography by using metasurfaces made of subwavelength metallic nanorods with spatially varying orientations. The phase discontinuity takes place when the helicity of incident circularly polarized light is reversed. As the phase can be continuously controlled in each subwavelength unit cell by the rod orientation, metasurfaces represent a new route towards high-resolution on-axis three-dimensional holograms with a wide field of view. In addition, the undesired effect of multiple diffraction orders usually accompanying holography is eliminated.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Metamaterials and Metasurfaces Applications"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"Three-dimensional optical holography using a plasmonic metasurface\" by Lingling Huang, Xianzhong Chen, Holger Mühlenbernd et al., https://doi.org/10.1038/ncomms3808, used under its Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY); markup removed, otherwise unmodified."},{"id":"doi:10.1016/j.physrep.2016.04.004","kind":"article","title":"Metasurfaces: From microwaves to visible","authors":["Stanislav Glybovski","Sergei Tretyakov","Pavel A. However, current configurations are only space-encoded, and do not exploit the temporal dimension. Here, we propose a general theory of space-time modulated digital coding metasurfaces to obtain simultaneous manipulations of EM waves in both space and frequency domains, i.e., to control the propagation direction and harmonic power distribution simultaneously. As proof-of-principle application examples, we consider harmonic beam steering, beam shaping, and scattering-signature control. For validation, we realize a prototype controlled by a field-programmable gate array, which implements the harmonic beam steering via an optimized space-time coding sequence. Numerical and experimental results, in good agreement, demonstrate good performance of the proposed approach, with potential applications to diverse fields such as wireless communications, cognitive radars, adaptive beamforming, holographic imaging.","abstract_license":"CC-BY (publisher license, via OpenAlex)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Advanced Antenna and Metasurface Technologies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex","attribution":"Abstract of \"Space-time-coding digital metasurfaces\" by Lei Zhang, Xiao Qing Chen, Shuo Liu et al., https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-018-06802-0, used under its Creative Commons Attribution license (CC-BY); markup removed, otherwise unmodified."},{"id":"arxiv:1806.01792","kind":"article","title":"A New Wireless Communication Paradigm through Software-Controlled Metasurfaces","authors":["Christos Liaskos","Shuai Nie","Ageliki Tsioliaridou","Andreas Pitsillides","Sotiris Ioannidis","Ian Fuat Akyildiz"],"author_count":6,"year":2018,"published":"2018-09-01","venue":"IEEE Communications Magazine","cited_by":1261,"doi":"10.1109/mcom.2018.1700659","arxiv_id":"1806.01792","nct_id":null,"source_url":"https://doi.org/10.1109/mcom.2018.1700659","archive_url":"https://space-kitty.com/papers/arxiv:1806.01792","updated":"2018-06-04","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"W2805166665","pdf_url":"https://arxiv.org/pdf/1806.01792","abstract":"Electromagnetic waves undergo multiple uncontrollable alterations as they propagate within a wireless environment. Free space path loss, signal absorption, as well as reflections, refractions and diffractions caused by physical objects within the environment highly affect the performance of wireless communications. Currently, such effects are intractable to account for and are treated as probabilistic factors. The paper proposes a radically different approach, enabling deterministic, programmable control over the behavior of the wireless environments. The key-enabler is the so-called HyperSurface tile, a novel class of planar meta-materials which can interact with impinging electromagnetic waves in a controlled manner. The HyperSurface tiles can effectively re-engineer electromagnetic waves, including steering towards any desired direction, full absorption, polarization manipulation and more. Multiple tiles are employed to coat objects such as walls, furniture, overall, any objects in the indoor and outdoor environments. An external software service calculates and deploys the optimal interaction types per tile, to best fit the needs of communicating devices. Evaluation via simulations highlights the potential of the new concept.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Advanced Antenna and Metasurface Technologies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). Realization of the next generation high-performance classical and quantum devices, however, requires much lower optical losses than the current state of the art ($\\sim$10 million). Unfortunately, material limitations of ion-sliced thin-film lithium niobate have not been explored, and therefore it is unclear how high-quality factor can be achieved in this platform. While great progress has been made on the development of low-loss integrated photonics platforms at telecom wavelengths, visible wavelength range has received less attention. Yet, many applications utilize visible or near-visible light, including those in optical imaging, optogenetics, and quantum science and technology. Here we demonstrate an ultra-low loss integrated visible photonics platform based on thin film lithium niobate on insulator. Our waveguides feature ultra-low propagation loss of 6 dB/m, while our microring resonators have an intrinsic quality factor of 11 million, both measured at 637 nm wavelength. Additionally, we demonstrate an on-chip visible intensity modulator with an electro-optic bandwidth of 10 GHz, limited by the detector used. The ultra-low loss devices demonstrated in this work, together with the strong second- and third-order nonlinearities in lithium niobate, open up new opportunities for creating novel passive, and active devices for frequency metrology and quantum information processing in the visible spectrum range.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":false,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["physics.app-ph","physics.optics"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0).
