Cuprates are the only unconventional superconducting family that host bulk superconductivity with T_cs above the liquid nitrogen boiling temperature at 77 Kelvin. Here we report an observation of superconductivity in single crystals of La3Ni2O7 with a maximum T_c of 80 Kelvin at pressures between 14.0-43.5 gigapascals using high-pressure resistance and mutual inductive magnetic susceptibility measurements. The superconducting phase under high pressure exhibits an orthorhombic structure of Fmmm space group with the 3d_(x^2-y^2 ) and 3d_(z^2 ) orbitals of Ni cations strongly interacting with oxygen 2p orbitals. Our density functional theory calculations suggest the superconductivity emerges coincidently with the metallization of the σ-bonding bands under the Fermi level, consisting of the 3d_(z^2 ) orbitals with the apical oxygens connecting Ni-O bilayers. Thus, our discoveries not only reveal important clues for the high-T_c superconductivity in this Ruddlesden-Popper double-layered perovskite nickelates but also provide a new family of compounds to investigate the high-T_c superconductivity mechanism.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Physics of Superconductivity and Magnetism"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). This discovery positions \\LN\\ as the first bulk nickelate with high-temperature superconductivity, but the lack of zero resistance presents a significant drawback for validating the findings. Here we report pressure measurements up to over 30 GPa using a liquid pressure medium and show that single crystals of \\LNO\\ do exhibit zero resistance. We find that \\LNO\\ remains metallic under applied pressures, suggesting the absence of a metal-insulator transition proximate to the superconductivity. Analysis of the normal state $T$-linear resistance suggests an intricate link between this strange metal behaviour and superconductivity, whereby at high pressures both the linear resistance coefficient and superconducting transition are slowly suppressed by pressure, while at intermediate pressures both the superconductivity and strange metal behaviour appear disrupted, possibly due to a nearby structural instability. The association between strange metal behaviour and high-temperature superconductivity is very much in line with diverse classes of unconventional superconductors, including the cuprates and Fe-based superconductors. Understanding the superconductivity of \\LNO\\ evidently requires further revealing the interplay of strange metal behaviour, superconductivity, as well as possible competing electronic or structural phases.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). Here, our investigation reveals that application of pressure effectively suppresses the spin and charge order in trilayer nickelate La4Ni3O10-δ single crystals, leading to the emergence of superconductivity with a maximum critical temperature (Tc) of around 30 K at 69.0 GPa. The DC susceptibility measurements confirm a substantial diamagnetic response below Tc, indicating the presence of bulk superconductivity with a volume fraction exceeding 80%. In the normal state, we observe a \"strange metal\" behavior, characterized by a linear temperature-dependent resistance extending up to 300 K. Several key questions regarding the pairing mechanism remain to be answered, such as the most relevant atomic orbitals and the role of atomic deficiencies. Here, we develop a new energy-filtered multislice electron ptychography technique, assisted with electron energy loss spectroscopy, to address these critical issues. Oxygen vacancies are directly visualized and are found to primarily occupy the inner apical sites, which have been proposed to be crucial to superconductivity. We precisely determine the nanoscale stoichiometry and its correlation to the oxygen K edge spectra, which reveals a significant inhomogeneity in the oxygen content and electronic structure within the sample. The spectroscopic results also unveil that stoichiometric La3Ni2O7 is in the charge-transfer regime, with holes that are self-doped from Ni sites into O sites. The outer apical oxygen is found to be less relevant to the low-energy physics and can be safely disregarded in theoretical models. These observations will assist in further development and understanding of superconducting nickelate materials. Our imaging technique for quantifying atomic deficiencies can also be widely applied in materials science and condensed matter physics.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Physics of Superconductivity and Magnetism"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates RNiO2 (R = rare-earth element) further strengthens these efforts. With a crystal structure similar to the infinite-layer cuprates - transition metal oxide layers separated by a rare-earth spacer layer - formal valence counting suggests that these materials have monovalent Ni1+ cations with the same 3d electron count as Cu2+ in the cuprates. Here, we use x-ray spectroscopy in concert with density functional theory to show that the electronic structure of RNiO2 (R = La, Nd), while similar to the cuprates, includes significant distinctions. Unlike cuprates with insulating spacer layers between the CuO2 planes, the rare-earth spacer layer in the infinite-layer nickelate supports a weakly-interacting three-dimensional 5d metallic state. This three-dimensional metallic state hybridizes with a quasi-two-dimensional, strongly correlated state with 3dx2-y2 symmetry in the NiO2 layers. Thus, the infinite-layer nickelate can be regarded as a sibling of the rare earth intermetallics, well-known for heavy Fermion behavior, where the NiO2 correlated layers play an analogous role to the 4f states in rare-earth heavy Fermion compounds. This unique Kondo- or Anderson-lattice-like \"oxide-intermetallic\" replaces the Mott insulator as the reference state from which superconductivity emerges upon doping.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["cond-mat.supr-con","cond-mat.str-el"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv+openalex","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and indeed superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$. Undoped NdNiO$_2$ belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$_n$O$_{2n+2}$ and is known as the 'infinite-layer' ($n = \\infty$) nickelate. Here, we report the synthesis of the quintuple-layer ($n = 5$) member of this series, Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$, in which optimal cuprate-like electron filling ($d^{8.8}$) is achieved without chemical doping. We observe a superconducting transition beginning at $\\sim$13 K. Electronic structure calculations, in tandem with magnetoresistive and spectroscopic measurements, suggest that Nd$_6$Ni$_5$O$_{12}$ interpolates between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behavior. Our analysis reveals an $s^{\\pm}$-wave pairing symmetry driven by spin fluctuations. The crucial role of pressure lies in that it induces the emergence of the $γ$-pocket, which is involved in the strongest Fermi-surface nesting. Unlike the metal-insulator transition in Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the undoped and underdoped La1-xCaxNiO2 thin films are entirely insulating from 300 K down to 2 K. A superconducting dome is observed at 0.15<x<0.3 with weakly insulating behavior at the overdoped regime. Moreover, the sign of the Hall coefficient $R_H$ changes at low temperature for samples with a higher doping level. However, distinct from the Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the $R_H$-sign-change temperature remains at around 35 K as the doping increases, which begs further theoretical and experimental investigation in order to reveal the role of the 4f orbital to the (multi)band nature of the superconducting nickelates. Here we report our direct measurement of the electronic structures of La3Ni2O7 by high-resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi surface and band structures of La3Ni2O7 are observed and compared with the band structure calculations. Strong electron correlations are revealed which are orbital- and momentum dependent. A flat band is formed from the Ni-3dz2 orbitals around the zone corner which is ~50meV below the Fermi level and exhibits the strongest electron correlation. Here with state-of-the-art tensor-network methods, we study a bilayer $t$-$J$-$J_\\perp$ model for La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and find a robust $s$-wave superconductive (SC) order mediated by interlayer magnetic couplings. Large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations find algebraic pairing correlations with Luttinger parameter of $K_{\\rm SC} \\simeq 1$. Infinite projected entangled-pair state method obtains a nonzero SC order directly in the thermodynamic limit, and estimates a strong pairing strength $\\barΔ_z \\sim \\mathcal{O}(0.1)$. Tangent-space tensor renormalization group simulations further determine a high SC temperature $T_c^*/J \\sim \\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ and clarify the temperature evolution of SC order. Because of the intriguing orbital selective behaviors and strong Hund's rule coupling in the compound, $t$-$J$-$J_\\perp$ model has strong interlayer spin exchange (while negligible interlayer hopping), which greatly enhances the SC pairing in the bilayer system. Such a magnetically mediated strong pairing has also been observed recently in the optical lattice of ultracold atoms. We show that three orbitals are necessary to represent the electronic structure around the Fermi level: Ni 3dx2-y2, Nd 5d3z2-r2, and a bonding orbital made from an interstitial s orbital in the Nd layer and the Nd 5dxy orbital. By constructing a three-orbital model for these states, we find that the hybridization between the Ni 3dx2-y2 state and the states in the Nd layer is tiny. We also find that the metallic screening by the Nd layer is not so effective in that it reduces the Hubbard U between the Ni 3dx2-y2 electrons just by 10--20 %. On the other hand, the electron-phonon coupling is not strong enough to mediate superconductivity of Tc ~ 10 K. These results indicate that NdNiO2 hosts an almost isolated correlated 3dx2-y2 orbital system. We further study the possibility of realizing a more ideal single-orbital system in the Mott-Hubbard regime. We find that the Fermi pockets formed by the Nd-layer states dramatically shrink when the hybridization between the interstitial s state and Nd 5dxy state becomes small. By an extensive materials search, we find that the Fermi pockets almost disappear in NaNd2NiO4 and NaCa2NiO3.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Physics of Superconductivity and Magnetism"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). We argue that the weak coupling model from the almost fully-filled $d_{z^{2}}$ bonding band cannot give rise to its high $T_{c}$, and thus propose a strong coupling model based on local inter-layer spin singlets of Ni-$d_{z^{2}}$ electrons due to their strong on-site Coulomb repulsion. This leads to a minimal effective model that contains local pairing of $d_{z^{2}}$ electrons and a considerable hybridization with near quarter-filled itinerant $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ electrons on nearest-neighbor sites. Their strong coupling provides a unique two-component scenario to achieve high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity. La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is not superconducting under ambient pressure but exhibits a transition at $T^{\\ast} \\simeq 115$~K. Understanding the electronic correlations and charge dynamics is an important step towards the origin of superconductivity and other instabilities. Here, our optical study shows that La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ features strong electronic correlations which significantly reduce the electron's kinetic energy and place this system in the proximity of the Mott phase. The low-frequency optical conductivity reveals two Drude components arising from multiple bands at the Fermi level. The transition at $T^{\\ast}$ removes the Drude component exhibiting non-Fermi liquid behavior, whereas the one with Fermi-liquid behavior is barely affected. These observations in combination with theoretical results suggest that the Fermi surface dominated by the Ni-$d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ orbital is removed due to the transition at $T^{\\ast}$. Our experimental results provide pivotal information for understanding the transition at $T^{\\ast}$ and superconductivity in La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by-nc-nd","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Physics of Superconductivity and Magnetism"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0).
