The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $ω_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\\tildeω'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\\circ}$C. The ratio $ω_a / {\\tildeω'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_μ({\\rm FNAL}) = 116\\,592\\,040(54)\\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $μ^+$ and $μ^-$, the new experimental average of $a_μ({\\rm Exp}) = 116\\,592\\,061(41)\\times 10^{-11}$ (0.35\\,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Particle physics theoretical and experimental studies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant $α$ and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including $\\mathcal{O}(α^5)$ with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by $(m_μ/M_W)^2$ and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at $\\mathcal{O}(α^2)$ and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at $\\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads $a_μ^\\text{SM}=116\\,591\\,810(43)\\times 10^{-11}$ and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7$σ$. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. This and the prospects to further reduce the theoretical uncertainty in the near future-which are also discussed here-make this quantity one of the most promising places to look for evidence of new physics.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by-nc-nd","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Particle physics theoretical and experimental studies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). Focus has been placed on the development of a new data combination method, which fully incorporates all correlated statistical and systematic uncertainties in a bias free approach. All available $e^+e^-\\rightarrow {\\rm hadrons}$ cross section data have been analysed and included, where the new data compilation has yielded the full hadronic $R$-ratio and its covariance matrix in the energy range $m_π\\leq\\sqrt{s}\\leq 11.2$ GeV. Indeed the decay $μ\\to e γ$ is induced by the same amplitude for different choices of in- and outgoing leptons. In this work, we try to address some intriguing questions such as: Which hierarchy in the charged lepton sector one should have in order to reconcile possible signals coming simultaneously from $g-2$ and lepton flavor violation? What can we learn if the $g-2$ anomaly is confirmed by the upcoming flagship experiments at FERMILAB and J-PARC, and no signal is seen in the decay $μ\\rightarrow eγ$ in the foreseeable future? On the other hand, if the $μ\\rightarrow eγ$ decay is seen in the upcoming years, do we need to necessarily observe a signal also in $g-2$?. In this attempt, we generally study the correlation between these observables in a detailed analysis of simplified models. We derive master integrals and fully analytical and exact expressions for both phenomena, and adress other flavor violating signals. We investigate under which conditions the observations can be made compatible and discuss their implications. Lastly, we discuss in this context several extensions of the SM, such as the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, Left-Right symmetric model, $B-L$ model, scotogenic model, two Higgs doublet model, Zee-Babu model, 331 model, and $L_μ-L_τ$, dark photon, seesaw models type~I, II and III, and also address the interplay with $μ\\to eee$ decay and $μ-e$ conversion.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Particle physics theoretical and experimental studies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, ω[over ˜]_{p}^{'}, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, ω_{a}. From the ratio ω_{a}/ω[over ˜]_{p}^{'}, together with precisely determined external parameters, we determine a_{μ}=116 592 057(25)×10^{-11} (0.21 ppm). In this context it has often been argued that in UV complete models the electron EDM, which is very precisely measured, excludes a large effect in $d_μ$. However, the recently observed 2.5$σ$ tension in $a_e=(g-2)_e/2$, if confirmed, requires that the muon and electron sectors effectively decouple to avoid constraints from $μ\\to eγ$. We briefly discuss UV complete models that possess such a decoupling, which can be enforced by an Abelian flavor symmetry $L_μ-L_τ$. We show that, in such scenarios, there is no reason to expect a correlation between the electron and muon EDM, so that the latter can be sizable. New limits on $d_μ$ improved by up to two orders of magnitude are expected from the upcoming $(g-2)_μ$ experiments at Fermilab and J-PARC. Beyond, a proposed dedicated muon EDM experiment at PSI could further advance the limit. In this way, future improved measurements of $a_e$, $a_μ$, as well as the fine-structure constant $α$ are not only set to provide exciting precision tests of the SM, but, in combination with EDMs, to reveal crucial insights into the flavor structure of physics beyond the SM.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Particle physics theoretical and experimental studies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). During this work, we found that one of the integrals, called $X024$, was given a wrong value in the previous calculation due to an incorrect assignment of integration variables. The correction of this error causes a shift of $-1.25$ to the Set~V contribution, and hence to the tenth-order universal (i.e., mass-independent) term $ A_1^{(10)}$. The previous evaluation of all other 388 integrals is free from errors and consistent with the new evaluation. Combining the new and the old (excluding $X024$) calculations statistically, we obtain $7.606~(192) (α/π)^5$ as the best estimate of the Set V contribution. Including the contribution of the diagrams with fermion loops, the improved tenth-order universal term becomes $A_1^{(10)}=6.678~(192)$. Adding hadronic and electroweak contributions leads to the theoretical prediction $a_e (\\text{theory}) =1~159~652~182.032~(720)\\times 10^{-12}$. From this and the best measurement of $a_e$, we obtain the inverse fine-structure constant $α^{-1}(a_e) = 137.035~999~1491~(331)$. There is also the long lasting discrepancy of about $3σ$ in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and the branching ratio for $τ\\toμνν$ is $1.8σ$ ($2.4σ$) above the Standard Model expectation using the HFAG (PDG) values. Furthermore, CMS found hints for a non-zero decay rate of $h\\toμτ$. Interestingly, all these observations can be explained by introducing new scalars. In this article we consider these processes within a lepton-specific two-Higgs doublet model (i.e. of type X) with additional non-standard Yukawa couplings. It is found that one can accommodate $τ\\toμνν$ with modified Higgs--$τ$ couplings. The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon can be explained if the additional neutral CP-even Higgs $H$ is light (below 100 GeV). Also $R(D)$ and $R(D^*)$ can be easily explained by additional $t$--$c$--Higgs couplings. Combining these $t$--$c$ couplings with a light $H$ the decay rate for $t\\to H c$ can be in a testable range for the LHC. Effects in $h\\toμτ$ are also possible, but in this case a simultaneous explanation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is difficult due to the unavoidable $τ\\toμγ$ decay.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Particle physics theoretical and experimental studies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). In the conventional PS model, a spontaneous breaking of the PS gauge group down to the SM one can only take place at very high scales (above the PeV scale) due to the stringent bounds from $K_L\\toμe$ and $K\\toπμe$ induced by the resulting vector leptoquarks. In this paper, we show that these constraints can be avoided once additional vector-like fermions are introduced and thus a breaking at the TeV scale is possible. We consider the flavor phenomenology of this model in the context of the intriguing hints for new physics in semileptonic $B$ decays. The necessary violation of lepton flavor universality is induced by mixing SM and vector-like fermions. Concerning $R(D)$ and $R(D^*)$ we find that sizable effects are possible while respecting the bounds from other flavor observables but predicting a large enhancement of $B_s\\toτ^+τ^-$. Furthermore, also in $b\\to s\\ell^+\\ell^-$ transitions the observed deviations from the SM predictions (including $R(K)$ and $R(K^*)$) can be explained with natural values for the free parameters of the model without any fine-tuning, predicting sizable decay rates for $b\\to sτμ$. Such a scenario is motivated by the longstanding $\\sim \\, 4 σ$ discrepancy between the measured and predicted values of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $(g-2)_μ$, as well as the tension between late and early time determinations of the Hubble constant. If sufficiently light, the $Z'$ population will decay to neutrinos, increasing the overall energy density of radiation and altering the expansion history of the early universe. We identify two distinct regions of parameter space in this model in which the Hubble tension can be significantly relaxed. The first of these is the previously identified region in which a $\\sim \\, 10-20$ MeV $Z'$ reaches equilibrium in the early universe and then decays, heating the neutrino population and delaying the process of neutrino decoupling. For a coupling of $g_{μ-τ} \\simeq (3-8) \\times 10^{-4}$, such a particle can also explain the observed $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. In the second region, the $Z'$ is very light ($m_{Z'} \\sim 1\\,\\text{eV}$ to $\\text{MeV}$) and very weakly coupled ($g_{μ-τ} \\sim 10^{-13}$ to $10^{-9}$). In this case, the $Z'$ population is produced through freeze-in, and decays to neutrinos after neutrino decoupling. Across large regions of parameter space, we predict a contribution to the energy density of radiation that can appreciably relax the reported Hubble tension, $ΔN_{\\rm eff} \\simeq 0.2$.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Cosmology and Gravitation Theories"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). We use state-of-the-art calculations and a sophisticated set of tools to make predictions for $a_μ$, dark matter and LHC searches in a wide range of simple models with up to three new fields, that represent some of the few ways that large $Δa_μ$ can be explained. In addition for the particularly well motivated Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, we exhaustively cover the scenarios where large $Δa_μ$ can be explained while simultaneously satisfying all relevant data from other experiments. Generally, the $Δa_μ$ result can only be explained by rather small masses and/or large couplings and enhanced chirality flips, which can lead to conflicts with limits from LHC and dark matter experiments. Our results show that the new measurement excludes a large number of models and provides crucial constraints on others. Two-Higgs doublet and leptoquark models provide viable explanations of $a_μ$ only in specific versions and in specific parameter ranges. Among all models with up to three fields, only models with chirality enhancements can accommodate $a_μ$ and dark matter simultaneously. The MSSM can simultaneously explain $a_μ$ and dark matter for Bino-like LSP in several coannihilation regions. Allowing under abundance of the dark matter relic density, the Higgsino- and particularly Wino-like LSP scenarios become promising explanations of the $a_μ$ result.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":"cc-by","is_open_access":true,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["Particle physics theoretical and experimental studies"],"details":null,"provenance":"openalex+arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0). In particular, we demonstrate that a muon collider, running at center-of-mass energies of several TeV, can provide a unique test of new physics in the muon g-2 through the study of high-energy processes such as mu+ mu- -> h gamma. This high-energy test would be of the utmost importance to shed light on the long-standing muon g-2 anomaly as it is not affected by the hadronic and experimental uncertainties entering the current low-energy determination of the muon g-2. Furthermore, we show that the current bound on the muon electric dipole moment can be improved by three orders of magnitude, down to few x 10^-22 e cm.","abstract_license":"CC0-1.0 (arXiv descriptive metadata)","license":null,"is_open_access":false,"retracted":false,"peer_reviewed":null,"categories":["hep-ph","hep-ex"],"details":null,"provenance":"arxiv","attribution":"Abstract: arXiv descriptive metadata (CC0).
