Abstract

Geometry can suppress leading Kelvin-wave conversion even at exact momentum and frequency resonance. We demonstrate this on a vortex surface in four spatial dimensions. Perpendicular incidence removes the complete local-area four-wave coupling, exposing the finite nonlocal interaction carried by the surrounding fluid. Reflection keeps the quartets exactly resonant as their wave-number ratio varies. The flow restores conversion at generic ratios but develops a sign-changing zero of its own. Matching the complete Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) four-wave coupling establishes microscopic zeros whose ratios approach $λ_*\simeq 1.469$ at long wavelengths. Finite-domain GP calculations exhibit the sign reversal. Separate coherent-mixing and probe calculations relate the coupling sign to the generated-wave phase and the frequency ordering of reflection-even and reflection-odd modes. The result isolates a nonlinear effect of the surrounding flow and provides a phase-sensitive test of vortex dynamics beyond local tension.
