Abstract
We give a matrix lifting of the entropy-splitting theorem of Csiszár, Körner, Lovász, Marton, and Simonyi, and show several applications. We use it to prove the Cartesian-product inequality conjectured by Sinjorgo and Sotirov for the generalized Lovász theta number, and we also answer the saturation and convexification questions of Carli Silva, Coutinho, Oliveira, and Tunçel on the same theme. For the strong Hoffman bound, we answer a question of Wocjan, Elphick, and Darbari concerning orthogonal rank, and show that optimization over matrix weights gives exactly the ceiling of the theta number of the complement. Finally, we extend the lifting to diagonally invariant cones of positive semidefinite matrices, giving a proof of a conjecture by Kuryatnikova, Sotirov, and Vera, and giving a short proof, for all graphs, of a theta-based weakening of Fajtlowicz's graph-energy conjecture.
